4-Cyano-3-methoxy-1-methyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroisoquinolin-8-one was prepared from 4-cyano-3-methoxy-1-methyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroisoquinoline following essentially the same procedure as that described in Tetrahedron, 1975, 31, 527 for the synthesis of 4-cyano-3-ethoxy-1-methyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroisoquinolin-8-one and was obtained as white crystals, mp 128° C. Pmr spectrum (CDCl3 ; δ in ppm): 2.04-3.19 (6H,m); 2.86 (3H,s); 4.12 (3H,s).
