Reaction Steps
To a stirred solution of dl-4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-5-hydroxy-2-methyl-7-(4-thiaoctyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (337 mg, 1.0 mmole) in 5 ml acetonitrile cooled to 15° C. is added 0.5 ml aqueous formaldehyde and 100 mg sodium cyanoborohydride. Acetic acid is added to maintain a neutral pH until the reaction is complete. The reaction mixture is partitioned between water and ethyl ether, the organic phase dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to afford the title compound.
