Reaction Steps

Acetyl chloride (2.4 g, 30.1 mmol) was added dropwise to vigorously stirred mixture of 2-hexyloxyphenol (5.0 g, 25.8 mmol) and pyridine (5 ml) in dichloromethane (50 ml). The mixture was stirred for 1 hour and poured onto water. The organic layer was separated, dried (MgSO4), concentrated to give crude product which was purified by column chromatography on silica gel using dichloromethane petroleum spirit (1:3) as eluent to give title compound as a colourless oil (5.78 g, 95%). Found: C, 71.00; H, 8.35. C14H20O3 requires C, 71.19; H, 8.47. δH (CHCl3) 7.21-7.15 (m, 1H, ArH), 7.05-7.01 (m, 1H, ArH), 6.97-6.89 (m, 2H, ArH), 3.97 (t, J 6.5, 2H, OCH2), 2.30 (s, 3H, COCH3), 1.78-1.71 (m, 2H, ArOCH2CH2), 1.57-1.30 (m, 6H, CH2), 0.90 (t, J 6.9, 3H, CH2CH3).
