Procedure
To a solution of 30 g (0.217 mol) 6-hydroxy-nicotinic acid in 50 ml concentrated sulfuric acid was added 60 ml of a 1:1 mixture of conc. sulfuric acid and conc. nitric acid below 20° C. and stirred for 1 h at room temperature and afterwards heated to 80° C. for 4 h. The mixture was poured onto ice and the formed precipitate was collected and dried to yield 14.2 g (36%) of the title compound as a yellow amorphous solid.
