Reaction Steps
18.8 g (0.25 mole) Glycine 18 was suspended in 250 ml H2O and 11 g (0.275 mole) NaOH was added. The clear solution was cooled to <10° C. and a solution of 60 g (0.165 mole) (BOC)2O in 250 ml THF was added dropwise keeping T<10° C. (20 minutes). After stirring for 20 hours at room temperature the mixture was acidified to pH1 by adding 1N HCl. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (250, 100 and 100 ml), the combined organic layers were dried on MgSO4 and evaporated, yielding 47.5 g (>100%) 5 as a colourless oil which contained some THF but was used as such.
