To a solution of 1-(1-benzyloxycarbonyl-4-piperidinylmethyl)-4-(t-butoxycarbonylamino)piperidine (10.0 g) in ethanol (100 ml) and water (10 ml) is added a 10% palladium-on-carbon (1.2 g), and the mixture is reduced at a room temperature under at a moderate pressure (3.0 kg/cm2). After the consumption and disappearance of the starting compound is confirmed (about 2 hours thereafter), the catalyst is removed by filtration. The filtrate is evaporated under reduced pressure to give crude 4-(t-butoxycarbonylamino)-1-(4-piperidinyl-methyl)piperidine (about 7 g) as a white solid.
