To a stirred solution of 2,5-di(4-pyridyl)-4-methylthiophene-3-carbaldehyde (0.145 g) in methanol (10 mL) was added sodium borohydride (0.11 g) at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. Phosphate buffer was added to the reaction mixture and MeOH was removed by evaporation. The residue was extracted with ethyl acetate (30 mL×2). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated in vacuo. The resulting residue was purified by flash chromatography eluting with ethyl acetate-CH2Cl2-MeOH (1:1:0.04) to give the subtitle compound (0.170 g).
