Reaction Steps
A mixture of 5 parts of the ethyl ester from (b), 5 parts of sodium bicarbonate, 70 parts by volume of water and 20 parts by volume of ethanol was warmed and stirred on a steam bath for 30 min. The cooled aqueous solution on acidification gave 4.6 parts of the required acid, m.p. 228°-232° C.
