A solution of 4-methyl-5-[(2-aminoethyl)thiomethyl]imidazole (1.7 g.) and S-methyl-N-nitroisothiourea (1.45 g.) in methanol (35 ml.) was heated at 50°-60° for 2/5 hours and then set aside at room temperature for 48 hours. The crystalline product was filtered off and recrystallised from methanol to give N-[2-((4-methyl-5-imidazolyl)methylthio)ethyl]-N'-nitroguanidine, m.p. 184°-186°. (Found: C, 37.5; H, 5.7: N, 32.5; S, 12.5. C8H14N6O2S requires: C, 37.2; H, 5.5; N, 32.5; S, 12.4).
