Procedure
A solution of 0.7 g of 2-[2-([1-carbethoxy-3-phenylpropyl]amino]-1-oxopropyl]octahydro-1H-isoindole-1-carboxylic acid hydrochloride in 15 ml of absolute ethanol is treated with 0.5 g of potassium hydroxide pellets. The mixture is stirred at room temperature overnight, then filtered and the solvent is evaporated at reduced pressure. The residue is taken up in 50 ml of water and acidified to pH 3 with 4N hydrochloric acid. The product precipitates out and is recrystallized from absolute ethanol; mp 193°-197° C. [α]D23 =-39.9°.
