Reaction Steps
In 300 ml of tetrahydrofuran under nitrogen was placed 81 ml of 10% lithium diisopropylamide in hexane. The mixture was then cooled to -70° C. and 6.7 g of 2-methylbutaneitrile was added. The reaction mixture was stirred and maintained at this temperature for 1 hour and then 9.9 g of diethyl disulfide was slowly added. After 30 minutes, the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature. A solid was filtered through celite and the filtrate was evaporated. The resulting residue was dissolved in methylene chloride, washed with water, and dried over NaSO4. Solvent removal gave 6.9 g of the desired product, b.p. 62°-65° C. (0.85 mm).
