Reaction Steps

A solution of 1.8 ml thionyl chloride in 25 ml of dry tetrahydrofuran (THF) was added dropwise to a solution of 6.8 g imidazole in 75 ml dry THF. After stirring for 1 hour, the reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate was added dropwise to 0.0125 mole of dry 5,6-dihydro-5-methyl-6-oxo-4H-imidazo[1,5-a][1,4]benzodiazepine-3-carboxylic acid in 100 ml dry dimethyl formamide. The reaction mixture was left overnight at room temperature with exclusion of water.
