Reaction Steps
A 10 ml round bottom flask was charged with 0.503 g of cis 1,2,3,4,4a,9b-hexahydro-4a-phenyl-benzofuro[3,2-c]pyridine followed by 1 ml of acrylonitrile. The resulting mixture was stirred for 1/2 hour at room temperature under nitrogen and then heated at 60° for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was diluted with 10 ml of ether and treated with 4 ml of ether saturated with HCl. After stirring for 15 minutes, the precipitated salt was filtered, washed with ether, and dried to give 0.68 g (99.8%) of crystalline solid, m.p. s 205°, 213°-216°. Recrystallization from ethanol afforded 0.50 g (73.3%) of crystals, m.p. s 213°, 216°-219°.
