Procedure

To a solution of ethyl 3(2-pyridyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol5-ylmethyl)-4-oxo-3H-phthalazin-1-ylacetate (1.0 g) in methanol (10 ml) was added 20% aqueous KOH (0.5 ml) and the mixture refluxed for 30 minutes. Evaporation of excess methanol gave an orange residue. The residue was dissolved in water, acidified with acetic acid (1 ml) and the precipitated solid was collected and crystallized from isopropanol to yield the product (0.53 g; m.p. 196°-200° C.).
