Reaction Steps
To the 2-[2-[(3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]-3,4-dimethoxybenzeneacetonitrile (5 g) in dichloromethane (100 ml) at -78°, under nitrogen was added 1M boron tribromide (80 ml) in dichloromethane. The reaction was then stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. Ice/water (50 ml) was added and the aqueous extracted with ether. The ethereal layer was dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to give a purple oil. This oil was dissolved in dry dimethylformamide (100 ml) and then potassium carbonate (22.18 g) followed by benzyl bromide (16.5 g) were added. The reaction was stoppered and stirred at room temperature for 14 hours. Ice/water was added, the aqueous layer extracted with ether, the ethereal layer washed with brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to give a yellow oil. This was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel using ether:petroleum ether 40°-60°; 1:2; v/v to give 2.6 g of the sub-title compound as a white solid, mp 90° (softens) -95° -97° melts.
