A solution of 3,4-Dimethoxy-2-[2-[3-methoxyphenyl]ethyl]benzeneacetonitrile (4.9 g) and potassium hydroxide (4.41 g) in ethanol (150 ml) and water (50 ml) was heated under reflux for 18 hours. The mixture was evaporated to dryness and the residue dissolved in water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic solution was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated to leave the sub-title compound as an oil which solidified on trituration with petrol ether (1.72 g), mp 77°-79°.
