Reaction Steps

2-Acetylaminopropanedioic acid diethyl ester (20.8 g) was added to a solution of sodium ethoxide in ethanol (prepared from sodium (2.2 g) and ethanol (100 ml). After the mixture was stirred for 10 minutes at ambient temperature, 1-(1-bromoethyl)naphthalene was added. The reaction mixture was stirred for 18 hours at room temperature. The precipitated solid was collected by filtration and dissolved in chloroform. The chloroform solution was dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated to give 2-acetylamino-2-[1-(1-naphthyl)ethyl]propanedioic acid diethyl ester (21.59 g).
