A solution of 7.88 g of 2,4,5-trifluoro-β-oxobenzenepropanoic acid, ethyl ester, 8.15 ml of 98% triethoxymethane and 7.5 ml of acetic anhydride in a 50 ml of flask was connected through a short distillation head to a 160 mm vacuum source and heated at 115° C. for 3 hours. The solution was then evaporated in vacuo at 45° C. giving 9.67 g of α-(ethoxymethylene)-2,4,5-trifluoro-β-oxobenzenepropanoic acid, ethyl ester as a yellow oil.
