Reaction Steps
To a solution of 2,3-dichloro-4-(p-nitrophenoxy)phenyl acetonitrile (from Example 29) (6.5 g., 0.02 mole) in 15 ml. of 95% ethanol was added 5 ml. of concentrated H2SO4. The solution was refluxed for 24 hours. The ethanol was evaporated and the residue was diluted with water. The aqueous mixture was extracted with chloroform. The organic solution was washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to provide 6.9 g. of the desired ethyl ester. NMR (CDCl3): 3.87 (2H, s, ArCH2CO2Et); IR (CHCl3) 1730 cm-1.
