To a stirred solution of 1-(4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-cyclopentanecarbaldehyde (238) (17.0 g, 70.24 mmol) in methanol (200 mL), was added NaBH4 (5.33 g, 140.5 mmol) portion-wise at 0° C. The reaction mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 2 h. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was concentrated and the crude product was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×300 mL). The organic part was dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to give [1-(4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-cyclopentyl]-methanol (239) (15 g, 90%) as a white solid which was used for the next step without further purification.
