To a solution of 3-{1-[2-(4-Chloro-phenyl)-thiazol-5-yl]-ethoxy}-cyclopent-2-enone (2.29 g, 7.16 mmol) in ethylene glycol dimethyl ether (10 ml) was added 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide (100 μl) and the reaction heated to 230° C. by microwave irradiation for 30 minutes. The crude reaction mixture was dry loaded onto silica and purified by flash chromatography to give 2-[2-(4-Chloro-phenyl)-5-ethyl-thiazol-4-yl]-cyclopentane-1,3-dione (681 mg).
