To 6-bromo-5-methoxy-1,1-dimethyl-indan (0.6 g, 2.35 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (30 mL) was added BBr3 (1M in CH2Cl2, 4.70 mmol) dropwise at −78° C. Following addition the mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and subsequently stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The reaction mixture was then quenched with MeOH (5 mL). Aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate (10 mL) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was extracted with CH2Cl2. The organic phase was washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated. Silica gel chromatography (EtOAc/heptane) provided 0.51 g (90%) of 6-bromo-1,1-dimethyl-indan-5-ol.
