Procedure

To 5 mL of dried thionyl chloride (SOCl2) contained in a reaction vessel was slowly added 4 g (19 mmol) of 3,4-dimethoxy cinnamic acid (140) and 50 μl of dried N′N′-dimethylformamide. The contents of the reaction vessel were mixed continuously at room temperature for 10-15 minutes, and the resulting product was dried in vacuo at 30-40° C. to yield (E)-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)acryloyl chloride (180).
