To a solution of (S)-6-oxopiperidine-2-carboxylic acid (17 g, 120 mmol) in methanol (200 mL) was added thionyl chloride (87 mL, 1.2 mol) and the reaction mixture was stirred at RT overnight, concentrated, combined with the product of a similar preparation, washed with saturated aqueous NaHCO3, and extracted with EtOAc (4×200 mL). The organic layers were combined, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to provide crude (S)-methyl 6-oxopiperidine-2-carboxylate (36.5 g).
