Palladium on carbon (70 mg, 10 wt. %) was added to a solution of (Z)-ethyl 3-(pyridin-4-yl)but-2-enoate (0.70 g, 3.66 mmol) in EtOH (10 ml) and hydrogenated under balloon pressure for 18 h. The reaction mixture was filtered through a pad of celite and washed with EtOH. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 0.50 g (71.4%) of ethyl 3-(pyridin-4-yl)butanoate as light brown color liquid.
