Procedure
Into a 50-mL round-bottom flask, was placed 1-methoxy-2-methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)benzene (700 mg, 3.68 mmol, 1.00 equiv), CCl4 (3.0 mL). The mixture was cooled to 0° C. Br2 (698 mg, 4.37 mmol, 1.19 equiv) and AcOH (0.5 mL) were added. The resulting solution was stirred for 1 h at 30° C. The reaction process was monitored by TLC (Petroleum ether). The reaction was then quenched by the addition of 10 mL of saturated sodium bicarbonate. The resulting solution was extracted with 3×10 mL of dichloromethane and the organic layers combined and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under vacuum. The residue was applied onto a silica gel column with petroleum ether. This resulted in 0.7 g (71%) of 1-bromo-4-methoxy-3-methyl-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzene as yellow oil.
