Into a 50-mL round-bottom flask, was placed ethyl (2E)-3-[4-methoxy-3-methyl-2-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]prop-2-enoate (230 mg, 0.80 mmol, 1.00 equiv), Palladium carbon (300 mg), methanol (15 mL). The mixture was subjected to 2 atm of H2. The resulting solution was stirred overnight at 30° C. The reaction progress was monitored by LCMS. The solids were filtered out. The resulting mixture was concentrated under vacuum. This resulted in 0.22 g of ethyl 3-[4-methoxy-3-methyl-2-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]propanoate as colorless oil. The crude could be used for the next step directly.
