A solution of methyl 3-(furan-3-yl)-6-(2-hydroxybenzenesulphonylmethyl)-2-methoxybenzoate (Intermediate 137, 0.081 g), cesium carbonate (0.144 g) and N-(2-bromoethyl)-N,N,-diethylamine hydrochloride (0.058 g) in DMF (5 ml) was stirred at room temperature. On completion of the reaction, water and DCM were added and the organic layer was separated, dried (MgSO4) and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness and the residue was purified by chromatography on silica eluting with a mixture of methanol and DCM (1:19) to give methyl 6-[2-(2-diethylaminoethoxy)benzenesulphonylmethyl]-3-(furan-3-yl)-2-methoxybenzoate (0.101 g) as a colourless oil.
