The product of Example 29, step B and sodium 4-nitrobenzenesulfinate were coupled using the procedure of Example 29, step C. Purification by flash column chromatography (SiO2, 3:2 hexane/ethyl acetate) provided tert-butyl 8-(4-nitrophenylsulfonyl)-3,4-dihydrobenzofuro[3,2-c]pyridine-2(1H)-carboxylate (96 mg, 25%) as a pale yellow solid: 1H NMR (CDCl3, 300 MHz) δ 8.08 (s, 1H), 7.83 (dd, J=8.7, 1.8 Hz, 1H), 7.77-7.72 (m, 1H), 7.65 (dt, J=7.8, 2.1 Hz, 1H), 7.53 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 7.50-7.44 (m, 1H), 7.25-7.20 (m, 1H), 4.58 (s, 2H), 3.84 (t, J=5.7 Hz, 2H), 2.91-2.82 (m, 2H), 1.55 (s, 9H).
