4-[(2S)-Oxiranylmethoxy]benzonitrile (from step (v) above, 247 mg, 1.4 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of tert-butyl 9-hydroxy-9-methyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-3-carboxylate (from step (iv) above, 328 mg, 1.28 mmol) in acetonitrile:water (4:1). The reaction was heated to 60° C. for 12 h, after which stirring was continued at rt for a further 48 h.
