A solution of iso-propyl 7-[2-azido-2-(4-cyanophenyl)ethyl]-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-3-carboxylate (from step (vii) above; 7.51 g; 19.5 mmol) in aqueous ethanol (85%) was hydrogenated over 5% Pd/C at 1 atm until tlc indicated that the reaction was complete. The catalyst was removed by filtration through a pad of Celite®, and the filtrate concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound in 98% yield.
