A crude product (1.17 g) of N-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybutane-sulfonamide was dissolved in pyridine (3.0 ml) and acetic anhydride (1.5 ml) was added, and the mixture was left standing at room temperature for 1 hr. The reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and 1N hydrochloric acid. The organic layer was washed once with water and once with saturated brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to give N-tert-butyl-4-acetoxybutanesulfonamide (425 mg) as a pale-yellow oil.
