Reaction Steps

7-Dehydrositosterol (7) (1.5 g, 3.63 mmol) in ethanol (200 mL) was heated at 60° C. for 4 h. The reaction was monitored by TLC. The solution was concentrated in vacuo and the crude vitamin D5 was purified on a silica gel column using 20% ethyl acetate in hexane to yield 600 mg (40%) of Vitamin D5 (9).
