Reaction Steps
Potassium carbonate (62.4 g) was added in portions at 0° C. over 10 minutes to a stirred solution of N,O-dimethylhydroxylamine hydrochloride (250 g) in water (250 ml), then toluene (250 ml) was added and the mixture was stirred until the internal temperature reached 2° C. Butyryl chloride (26 ml) was added dropwise over 10 minutes, then the mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 5 minutes and at ambient temperature for 1 hour. The aqueous phase was separated and shaken with toluene (2×100 ml), then the combined toluene solutions were dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent was removed in vacuo to give N-methoxy-N-methylbutyramide (21.0 g) as a pale-yellow oil which was used without further purification.
