Reaction Steps

1,1,3,3-Tetramethylguanidine (52 μL) and nitromethane (222 μl) were added to a solution of crude (2S,4R)-4-(3-biphenyloxy)-N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-2-pyrrolidinecarboxaldehyde (B, 754 mg) in tetrahydrofuran (15 mL). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hr and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was diluted with ethyl acetate and washed with brine. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated in vacuo to give crude the titled compound (877 mg), which was used in the subsequent step.
