To a solution of 0.53 g (2.8 mmol) of 2-tert-butyl-5-aminobenzimidazole in 50 ml of AcOH was added 0.05 ml (1.0 mmol) of Br2 dropwise and resulting reaction mixture was stirred for 1 h at 25° C. Reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and purified on silica gel column chromatography (CHCl3, neat) to yield 0.18 g (0.67 mmol, 67%) of the desired product.
