To a solution of the compound obtained in (6) above (810 mg) in 30 ml of acetone was added 3 ml of 15% aqueous solution of magnesium sulfate. 1.17 gm of potassium permanganate was slowly added to the mixture while stirring. After 1 hour, the reaction product was extracted with chloroform, the extract was washed with water and saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated to obtain 806 mg of the title compound. NMR(CDCl3) δ: 2.05-2.17(2H, m), 2.23(3H, s), 2.68(2H, t, J=5.85 Hz), 3.00(2H, t, J=5.85 Hz), 8.61(1H, dd, J=7.8 Hz,13.2 Hz), 12.1-12.23(1H, br s).
