Reaction Steps
Tert-butyl hydrazinecarboxylate (250 g) was added to a toluene (3 L) solution of phthalic anhydride (280 g). In a Dean Stark water separator, the reaction mixture was heated under reflux for 3 hours. After cooled to room temperature, the formed solid was collected through filtration to give crude tert-butyl (1,3-dioxo-1,3-dihydro-2H-isoindol-2-yl)carbamate (516 g).
