After the dried batch reactor having the volume of 250 ml was prepared under an Ar atmosphere, 8.35 g of the protected 5-norbornene-2-carboxylic acid solution (30 mmol) and 50 ml of purified toluene were added thereto. After the temperature of the reactor was increased to 70° C., 0.3 μmol of isopropylene-(9-fluorenyl)-cyclopentadienyl-zirconium dichloride used as the catalyst and 1.2 mmol of MAO used as the cocatalyst were added thereto, and the polymerization was performed for 20 minutes while the pressure of ethylene was maintained at 75 psi. Next, ethylene was removed under excessive pressure, and the reaction solution was dropped on a large amount of methanol/hydrochloric acid aqueous solution (volume ratio 1/1) to obtain the polymer precipitate. The polymer that was obtained by filtering the precipitate by using the glass funnel was dried in a vacuum oven at 70° C. for 24 hours to obtain the 5-norbornene-2-carboxylic acid/ethylene copolymer (yield: 22.7%, Mw=65543, PDI=1.65).
