Reaction Steps

To a solution of commercially available 2-(2-bromophenyl)ethanol (1 eq.) in Benzene (0.85M) at room temperature was added sodium cyanate (2.1 eq) then TFA (2.2 eq) dropwise. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 6 h, poured in aqueous NaOH (1N) and extracted with EtOAc. The organic extract was washed with water, brine, dried over MgSO4 filtered and concentrated. Recrystallization in Et2O afforded the desired compound as a white solid.
