Reaction Steps
3-tert-butyl-2-methyl-1-oxo-4-phenyl-1,2-dihydroisoquinoline-6-carbonitrile (300 mg), 10 N NaOH (6 mL), and methanol (1 mL) were combined at heated at 110 C overnight. The reaction was acidified with 6 N HCl to give a precipitate, which was isolated by filtration. This material was partitioned between EtOAc and 1 N NaOH by stirring vigorously overnight. The organic solution was discarded, and the aqueous solution was allowed to stand overnight, during which time a precipitate formed. Filtration provided the titled compound.
