Reaction Steps

To a round bottom flask containing 1-bromo-4-cyclohexyl-benzene (1.5 g, 6.27 mmol) and 5-formyl-2-furan-boronic acid (1.32 g, 9.41 mmol) in dimethoxyethane (80 mL) and ethanol (20 mL) was added an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate (1:99 g, 18.81 mmol) in water (30 mL) The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 5 minutes, followed by the addition of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium (358 mg, 0.31 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated at 70° C. for 1 h. The reaction mixture was then cooled to room temperature and diluted with ethyl acetate (500 mL) and water (50 mL). The layers were separated and the aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (2×150 mL). The combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried (sodium sulfate) and concentrated under vacuum. The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with 15% ethyl acetate in hexanes to afford 5-(4-cyclohexyl-phenyl)-furan-2-carbaldehyde (850 mg, 53%) as a solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 1.28-1.46 (5H, m), 1.75-1.87 (5H, m), 2.53-2.54 (1H, m), 6.79 (1H, d, J=3.6 Hz), 7.26-7.32 (3H, m), 7.73-7.76 (2H, m), 9.63 (1H, s).
