Reaction Steps
A solution of 3'-chloro-3,3-dimethyl-spiro[cyclopropane-1,1'-indene]-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (2.0 g; 0.007 mole) in ethanol (10 ml) is added to a mixture of 50% aqueous potassium hydroxide (1.2 ml) and water (1.2 ml), and the mixture is heated at reflux for 11/2 hours, then cooled down, diluted with water and extracted with ether. The aqueous phase is then made acid with concentrated hydrochloric acid and extracted with ether. The ethereal extract is washed with water, saturated salt solution, dried over magnesium sulfate and is stripped to afford 1.5 g of title product, a red-brown semi-solid.
