A suspension of (S)-dibenzyl 2-(1,3-dimethyl-2,4-dioxo-5-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-6(2H)-yl)pentanedioate (3 g, 5.30 mmol) and 10% palladium on carbon (0.564 g, 0.530 mmol) in ethanol (100 mL) was stirred under a hydrogen atmosphere for 140 mins. The mixture was filtered through a Celite® cartridge (10 g, filter material) and the residue rinsed well with methanol and 7N NH3/methanol. The combined filtrates were evaporated under vacuum to afford the title compound.
