Procedure
A mixture of methyl 3-chloro-4-[(2,4-difluorobenzyl)oxy]-5′,6-dimethyl-2-oxo-2H-1,4′-bipyridine-2′-carboxylate (0.13 g, 0.3 mmol) and 1.5 N NaOH (0.25 mL, 0.375 mmol) in dioxane (0.25 mL) was heated at 60° C. for 1 h and stirred at room temperature for an additional hr. The reaction mixture was acidified with acetic acid, and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×15 mL). The combined organic extract were washed with water and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound as a white powder (0.08 g) which was used without purification in the next step. ES-MS, m/z=421 (M+H).
