Procedure

A mixture of 6-bromo-1-methyl-2-(trichloromethyl)-1H-benzimidazole (0.781 g), sodium carbonate (0.298 g), MeOH (20 ml), and water (2 ml) was refluxed overnight. After evaporation of the solvent and addition of water, the mixture was extracted with EtOAc twice. The organic layer was separated, washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The solid was washed with Et2O to give the title compound (0.315 g) as a pale brown solid.
