A mixture of 1-(2-cyclopropyl-1-methyl-1H-benzimidazol-6-yl)-4-hydroxypyridin-2(1H)-one (3.0 g), bromoacetonitrile (0.82 ml), potassium carbonate (4.42 g) and DMF (10 ml) was stirred at 80° C. for 2 h. The mixture was poured into water and extracted with EtOAc. The extract was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, concentrated and purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane/EtOAc). The resulting solid was washed with IPE to give the title compound (2.39 g) as a pale yellow solid.
