To tert-butyl 2′-methylspiro[piperidine-4,4′-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzoxazine]-1-carboxylate (second eluting fraction from step 2) (0.40 g, 1.1 mmol) was added hydrogen chloride in 1,4-dioxane (2.8 mL of 4.0 M, 11 mmol) and the mixture stirred 1 h, then filtered and rinsed with 1:1 ether/isopropanol to give 2′-methylspiro[piperidine-4,4′-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzoxazine] as a pink solid. ESI-MS m/z calc. 254.3, found 255.3 (M+1)+; Retention time: 1.16 minutes (3 min run).
