4-(tert-Butylthio)benzoic acid (3.18 g, 15.1 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (78.70 mL) followed by the addition of water (7.9 mL) and OXONE (4.65 g, 7.56 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 45 minutes before it was filtered using methanol. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. Water (35 mL) was added to the residue and the mixture was basified using solid NaOH and was washed with ethyl acetate (3×50 mL). The aqueous layer was acidified with 1N HCl before it was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×100 mL). The combined organics were dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield 4-(tert-butylsulfinyl)benzoic acid (2.68 g, 78%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO) δ 13.29 (s, 1H), 8.12-8.08 (m, 2H), 7.73-7.69 (m, 2H), 1.09 (s, 9H). ESI-MS m/z calc. 226.1, found 227.3 (M+1)+; Retention time: 1.05 minutes (3 min run).
