To 177 mg (0.148 mmol) of phenyl hydroxy imidazole (from Step 1) and 50 μL of pyridine in 1.5 mL of methylene chloride at 0° C. was added 32 μL of thionyl chloride, and the resulting brown solution was stirred at room temperature for 2 hour. The reaction mixture was washed with water, dried and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified over silica gel to give 105 mg (92%) of conjugated phenyl imidazole biphenyl as an oil which solidified upon standing.
